From the creators of “The Little Mermaid” and “Aladdin” comes a modern twist on a classic tale, featuring a beautiful girl named Tiana (ANIKA NONI ROSE), a frog prince who desperately wants to be human again, and a fateful kiss that leads them both on a hilarious adventure through the mystical bayous of Louisiana.

10 Years ago when I created Multiple Shades of You Online, I so desperately wanted to fill the void within many young black girls in need of positive self-images. On the surface, it often seems like the conversations about black girls stop at our hair, our curves, and our sass, but there is so much more underneath. At the core of every black woman, from ages 2 to 92, there is a little girl dreaming to be a princess. For so long we’ve been limited to ‘holding white dolls’ and ‘seeing white images’ longing to be that girl with the Bluest Eyes, which is why this new emphasis on positive images for young black girls and boys is so long overdue. Princess Tiana, Disney’s 1st African American Princess, is going to play an integral part in transforming the lives of little black girls across American and around the world.

Beyond the fact that every and any family can enjoy watching The Princess and the Frog, I feel like now every black parent can now say “Yes, this is a princess for my princess.” Prior to the movies creation I personally put together a feature on Mahogany Momma entitled ‘Black Princesses and Positive Images for Black Girls.’ At the time, I had received several emails from black mothers searching for books, movies and even African American Princess party favors, so I felt this was a much needed project for me to take on. In my youth it meant a lot to see Brandy casted in the remake of Cinderella, but I don’t think anything can compare to Princess Tiana because her story will be the first animated main stream Black Princess story we all will know and love.

Watch the Trailer: Disney’s Princess and the Frog
